An Agriculture Visa has been delivered by The Nationals to secure the labour force that is required by Australian Farmers now and in the future. The Minister of Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management, David Littleproud said that the announcement of a new seasonal agriculture worker visa will come as a relief to the agriculture industry that has been suffering from an unstable workforce due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
This new visa will be extended to all ten ASEAN countries in light of the longstanding economic ties with the region.
The new seasonal agricultural worker visa will be mirroring the existing Seasonal Worker Programme and will add to the available workers to work on Australian farms. There is hope that this new visa arrangement will build on the success of previous Pacific worker programs that have played and will continue to play a critical role within the agricultural sector.
Like the Seasonal Worker Programme that this visa is mirroring there will be protections in place for workers. Protections for pay conditions, health and safety will also be in line with similar requirements and regulations as with the Seasonal Worker Programme.
With this new visa, there is hope that it will set up the industry for the future and will address the issue of availability of labour.
As of now the Australian Government will be working to have this new visa in place before the end of the year.
